Where I stand, and a glimpse into my values
I believe, and strive to keep closely considered, that an equal weighting is imperative when considering fostering intelligence, and building character; develop good people as global citizens who are intelligent.
I believe that an effective philosophy balances brevity with flexibility and relevance, and also expresses undisputed meaning and intent. Education must go beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic to emphasizing a need to develop good character. Character is needed alongside intelligence.
As a long-time mentor, parent, and informally, a teacher – I am entering a world of education now formally as a teacher. With diverse life experiences during adulthood, I have learned through my own successes and errors, and learned from others’ successes and mistakes. I strive to teach beyond what is perceived as academic intelligence, while also presenting opportunities for students to grow as people of good character who can think reflectively and critically.
Considering MLK’s quote “We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” I take to heart the importance of character, extending to the importance of humility throughout education. This includes myself as a teacher while also promoting humility to encourage its prevalence amongst students and also the greater community of families and my educator peers. To be humble is to appreciate the infinite knowledge and teachings available from others – whoever you are and whoever others may be.
